Artist Bio
Baylor Duncan is a California based artist currently living in Camarillo, CA. With her main artistic outlet being painting, she has also immersed herself in other mediums including photography, collage and fiber arts. Primarily working in abstraction, Duncan focuses on extracting colors from nature and enjoys exploring with various shapes, grids and textures. She uses her art to confront the ideas of the human condition while also striving to normalize and address mental health. Within her creative process she attempts to detach from the outside world and influences and chooses to focus inward on her own flow of consciousness. She is influenced by her anxious mind and the power of thought, and aims to channel that within each of her pieces. Her main goal within her work is to provoke her audience to think deeply about their consciousness and connection to themselves and humanity.
RE: Collection Statement
What keeps one going? What images replay like a film over and over in the mind, until death? What smell brings one back to that very moment that lives on in the memory? What memories will be cherished until one is no longer here, or until they no longer have the capacity to remember their own life; when the sound of their child’s voice, and the image of their face is forgotten? How does one confront the thought of potentially losing these precious memories?
In recent years, Duncan had to witness the deterioration of her Grandmother’s mind which ultimately led to her passing in late 2020. This event gave room for the artist to process the cycle of life and death in relation to memory. Seeing this disease affect her grandmother’s mind first hand was an experience that emphasized the importance and vulnerability of memory for the artist. Duncan’s painting, Untitled, represents the story of life through the culmination of objects that have the ability to reflect one’s identity.
